Many aspire to become actors, but even for those who are moderately successful, the chances of “making it big” (as in million-dollar mansions and everyone knowing who you are) are slim. So what can would-be actors do if they don’t catch their big break? Here are 5 alternative career paths that actors can pursue.

1. Director

Many who don’t make it as actors find that they know what they’re doing behind the camera. Just by having the experience of being on set and watching other directors, they learn what makes a compelling film and can use that to become directors. The most famous example of this is probably Ron Howard. Ron began his acting career as a child, starring in The Andy Griffith Show and then Happy Days. He decided, though, that he would be more successful as a director. Since then, he’s directed Academy Award-winning films, including Apollo 13 and A Beautiful Mind, as well as box office hits, including The Da Vinci Code and Cinderella Man.

2. Costume Designer

If you’ve worked in the film industry, you understand how important costume designers are to making a film authentic. To choose the right clothes for a character, you have to understand the time period that the film is set in, as well as the character and what he or she would wear. Many actors in college gain some experience with choosing costumes; this experience may be used later as an alternate career path.

3. Film Editor

Editing film can be a tedious task, and it is definitely not one of the more glamorous Hollywood careers. But having a good film editor is important for any film. Experienced actors may find that they have a knack for film editing because they understand what makes a good scene and how to edit it for the best impact.

4. Agent

Even if an actor realizes that he or she might not be successful as an actor, being able to recognize talent in others is a great skill to have. Additionally, by working in the industry, actors have undoubtedly made many contacts that they can use when promoting clients. If you can’t work as an actor, at least you can work with actors as an agent.

5. Casting Director

Those who have experience acting will likely be good at recognizing those who would fit the parts needed for movies. Casting directors with a keen eye are needed to help directors and producers fill both large and small roles in films.

For those who did not make it as actors in the film industry, there are many alternate career choices that can still allow them to work in the industry and use their experience to their benefit. Which of these career paths appeals to you the most?

Some teenagers expect to walk out of school into a job, so being thrown into a job hunt can be quite a shock, especially if they get rejected. As a parent, it is important to pass on your knowledge, but your teen might feel emotional and wounded, so you have to do with tact – avoid confrontation and arguments, and instead work on being supportive.

Talk to your teen about what area they would like to work in. What are their aims? It’s important that you know this, so you can help as much as possible.

Look at your childs resume. Offer to read it over, and just outline a few changes if they are needed – ensure it sells your child in the best light.

Encourage your child to get some experience. With so many job hunters, those without any history are at a disadvantage, so look for part-time or voluntary positions which will help your child to build skills and experience. Ensure you include this on the resume, even if the work is somewhere unrelated.

Use your own network. If you can get your child work or an internship, try to pull some strings. Remember, however, that you are choosing to do this – your child will already feel pressured to thrive when they find work, so you don’t need to remind them.

Hold a monthly meeting to discuss what’s happened that week, and what the plan for the next week is. This is the time to talk about job hunting – try to keep it out of the conversation the rest of the time.

Finally, once your child has a job, take them out to celebrate, and find some stylish and well-fitting office wear to make a good first impression.

Of all the skills you give your children, budgeting is one of the most important ones. Being able to budget is essential to make sure you can pay your rent, cover the bills and eat every day, and it’s also vital to saving for events such as holidays or weddings.

Many teenagers grow up without much knowledge of the value of money – it’s very difficult to teach this until your child begins paying for things themselves. One of the most effective ways involves collecting together bills, bank statements and wage slips, and talking your child through how much everything costs. While you might be uncomfortable sharing so much information which your teenager, this will really show them how much everything costs, and how much spare money there is.

Encourage your child to start earning as soon as they can, even if they don’t earn much – employers will respect the previous experience, and that they didn’t just sit around with friends. Charge some housekeeping, even if you don’t need it – your teenager will always have to pay rent, or a mortgage, so getting used to this is important. Work out how much of your wage you spend on the rent, and charge a similar amount – for example, 10%.

Set minature challenges. Give your child £50 and a shopping list, and see if they can get everything on it, or set an online shopping challenge, to see how cheap they can make your shop. Look at the cost of holidays together, and show how you need to save a little per month to have enough to go.

Not only will helping your child budget help them in the future, but it will also take some pressure off you – once your child knows how fast you can spend a few hours, or even a days, work, they are sure to understand why it’s important to manage your finances well, so you can enjoy luxuries.

Every parent wants their teenager to choose a perfect career – something which will make them proud, use their skills and keep them financially comfortable for their future. However, many teens aren’t sure what career they want to go into, and this can have an effect on the courses they choose to take – generic courses are less likely to be respected then specific ones which demonstrate an interest and knowledge in the area.

There are some things you can do to help your child choose a potential job. Consider their interests – if they love science, how about taking them to a sea-life centre, and talking about the jobs differnet people do there? Once your teen has done some research, if they are interested, ask about internships in different places, such as the centre or nearby marine science centres.

If your teen likes children, they may want to work with them in some way – in a nursery, as a nanny or in a school. Allow your teenager to experience children exactly how they are – ‘borrow’ a friends child for a few days, or help your teen to approach a local school about helping out for experience.

Be realistic. Sometimes teens have dreams which are very unlikely, such as playing basketball, or being an actress. Encourage these skills with extracurricular activities, but support your child in choosing other jobs they would like to do as a ‘back up’. For example, someone who loves children and loves drama might be great at teaching in a drama school for children, which would provide them with valuable work experience and a future career.

Finally, don’t push your child into anything. Try not to set your heart on them choosing a certain career, or following in your footsteps, and don’t influence your teen – you don’t want them to end up in a career they hate, or choosing a module they will struggle in just to keep you happy.

When it comes to choosing a career, there are plenty to chose from. Some people pick certain careers because they love the path, others because it will afford them a higher income. However you choose your career, be aware that there are some things you should do before settling on one.

Conduct a self-assessment of sorts. What do you like to do? What are your hobbies and interests? If you like to help and listen to people, perhaps something in the field of psychology is the right idea. If you want to teach, go into education. Make a list of the things you enjoy and try to match those things up with valid career fields. There are also tests and online assessments that you can take to help you narrow down your options.

Don’t choose a career unless you know you are capable of performing it. A job in finance might not be good for someone who doesn’t work well with numbers, just as a career in teaching may not suit someone who doesn’t like children. Know your capabilities and narrow your career choices based on those abilities.

Figure out what is important to you in a career. Are the people and company aesthetic important to you? Do you value a high income? What about the quality of work that the company produces? Once you know what you want from a company or career, it will be much easier to express those views and, eventually, choose one.

Choosing a career can be difficult, but if you take the necessary steps to narrow down your choices, the process will go smoothly.

You hear the knock on the door and can’t help letting a gasp escape as you see the guys (or girls) coming to pick your teen up to hang out. You try not to stare, but it’s hard not to with the hair, the clothes, the accessories. No matter who greets you at the door, do the best you can to reserve judgment until you get more of a chance to know them. This doesn’t mean that you are going to just let your teen walk out the door. But before you react, take a step back.

Smile, invite them in and be friendly. Some of the outrageous fashion trends that teens are drawn to are just a ploy to get attention. When you don’t give in or make it a big deal out of it, you gain the upper hand.

You also let them know you aren’t planning to judge the book by its cover. If you are having a hard time with this, think back to some of the things that you may have worn and how people treated you. You may not have been the handsome, clean-cut guy with the Rocawear clothing and nice shoes. However, that doesn’t mean that you were anything bad.

Actions, beyond what they wear or what they look like, are a much better predictor of the type of person they are and how they behave. Take a deep breath and talk to them like you would any other adult. Listen for things like manners and intelligent conversation. This is a much better indicator of what is inside. Don’t jump to conclusions and regret it.

Anyone with a job knows how important networking can be. Meeting new people within your business niche or who share your interests is very important, regardless of where you may work.

There are many different ways you can start networking. After all, sometimes the world of professionalism is all about “Who you know.” Professional associations are a great way to begin networking. Over the last ten years or so, these associations and their meetings have moved out of the worlds of law and medicine. There are groups for journalists, writers, and just about any other profession you can think of. Find a local group in your niche and start attending meetings.

The ever-popular website LinkedIn has become a go-to source for professional networking. Just like at a regular meeting, you can search for other people in your profession and can add them to your network. You can link yourself with old friends and relatives as well, which can also lead to new professional contacts. If you haven’t tried LinkedIn yet, take a look!

One other place that few people see network opportunities is through volunteer work. Believe it or not, depending on where you volunteer, there may be plenty of contacts. The best advice is to find an organization that interests you and inquire about volunteering. You never know what you’ll end up with until you try it.

Professional networking is important for everyone. Because, these days, business is all about who you know, networking may even help you find a job, or in some cases, a better one.

In a world of rapidly advancing technology, almost everyone who is searching for a job is doing so with the help of the Internet. There are numerous sites you can use to help aid in the search.

One of the most popular job search websites is Monster. This site allows you to set up a profile, complete with your career goals, job search objectives, experience, and you can even post skills such as computer use and languages you may know. On Monster, you’re allowed to build a resume or upload one. You’re given the option to make it public or keep it private. (Hint: Making it public allows employers to search for you.)

Another popular site is CareerBuilder. This site offers any of the same things as Monster, but will also send out job recommendations and lists if you want them. It can be helpful in finding specific positions in a certain career field. LIke Monster, you build a profile and have the choice to keep it private or let everyone see it.

Indeed is popular among employment seekers as well. However, it works a bit differently than Monster and CareerBuilder. Indeed is an aggregate job site, in that when you enter a job search term it compiles a list of results from all of the other job search sites on the Internet. You can organize the results list by relevancy or date.

These three sites will help make your next job search much easier. Gone are the days of going from business to business to inquire about positions and fill out applications. The internet brings it all to one spot for you.

LinkedIn is the new spot for professional networking and it costs no money to sign up. Chances are good that you already know quite a few people who are on the site. LinkedIn recently went public and the $45 share price it started the day with quickly doubled. If you are a professional it can’t hurt to sign up for the site and expand your network. Here are a couple ideas to consider when signing up on the site.

1.) Join groups relevant to your area of expertise. Regardless of your industry, there is undoubtedly many groups you can join. Become a visible member of the community by participating in discussions and directing traffic to your blog on the subject should you have one. By becoming part of the community, you will stand a much better chance of being considered when jobs open up if you’ve got a solid network of like minded professionals behind you.

2.) Build your network list. Adding friends, family members, and co-workers as contacts is certainly a great start. Beyond this you will need to be aggressive in linking up with other professionals you do not know quite as well. Start at companies your current employer does business with. Ideally, you will know one or two employees at this partner company and build your contact list from there. Once people see that their co-workers have also lined up with you, they will be likley to add you as well. Everyone likes having more LinkedIn contacts.

Judging by the strong IPO, LinkedIn looks like it will be a hot professional meet up spot for years to come.

Before choosing a career, the first and most important thing you need to think about is what you really love doing. What are your hobbies? What things are you most passionate about? Secondly, think of how you can turn these hobbies into a career. Don’t rule it out simply because you think you can make no money off of it. Success is not about what you do for a living, it is about how passionate you are about what you do, how motivated you are to get to where you want to go, and how much you love what you do.

Choosing a career can be a long and stressful process, but it doesn’t have to be as difficult as you make it out to be. To give some examples, here are five hobbies that can be turned into careers:

1. Drawing – This is a hobby many people enjoy and there are countless careers that involve drawing. You can be a book illustrator, graphic designer, architect, animator, set designer, freelancer and so much more! If you have a passion for drawing, it is definitely a good idea to look into all the career opportunities that are available to you. You may be surprised how many opportunities are actually out there.

Image via Wikipedia

2. Gardening – If your number one hobby is gardening, you may want to look into all the careers available in the area. Getting a career in gardening is a great way to put your skills to use, love your job, and get paid to do it!

3. Traveling – If you enjoy traveling, there are so many opportunities out there. Some people think of a hobby they have (such as traveling) and think that they could never make a career off of it. This is not true; you can make a living off of anything you think of. If you enjoy exploring and traveling to new places, there are a number of careers that focus on just that.

4. Computers – If you love computers, there are more opportunities out there for you than you could ever dream of. With everyone using technology more and more in the world today, there are more and more jobs every day for people just like you!

5. Dancing – Dancing is a hobby for a lot of people and for some, their passion and way of life. You do not have to be a professional dancer to have a career in dancing. You can be a teacher, choreographer, artistic director, dance therapist and many more!

Choosing a career is the first step in starting your new life, so take your time and really think about the things you enjoy. No matter what it is, you can find a career in anything. Finding a career that you absolutely love is the best way to be successful in life. What do you really love doing and how many different ways can you make a living off of it?

When choosing a career after college, it’s good to know what are likely solid fields of employment. Technology can often force people out of jobs. For instance, you can now check out most grocery store items on your own in a self check out line. This could prove the end of the cashier job as we know it. If you’re going to invest in an education, make sure the money you will make with your degree is well worth the investment to get your diploma. Below are a few of the fastest growing industries that should be safe to count on for jobs over the next decade at least.

1.) Heathcare Industry: People are still going to be sick so it’s doubtful the healthcare field will do anything but expand. There are plenty of careers from doctor to medical billing and coding. Nursing is still a growing field and pharmacy is a growing sector as seemingly more and more Americans are prescribed prescription pills.

2.) Alternative Energies: The price of gas continues to rise and $4 a gallon gas is annoying many consumers. There is a virtual fortune to be made in alternative energy if it could help reduce Americans dependence on gas and oil.

Fashion designers are finding that they can reach a larger number of customers by offering their clothing lines on their own ecommerce site. High-end designers of Coogi, Rocawear clothing, Nike, and other brand names have become highly successful and even more well-knownn because of this business method. However, simply creating a website isn’t enough. You must market your site and perform research to determine if your promotions are effective.

Attracting Customers

Although you should create an online store that’s visually appealing to engage your clientele, it will take more than a cutting-edge website to build this new segment of your business. To promote your brand, use social networking and other methods to create a little buzz. Research popular keywords your customers might use to search for designer fashions. By using them properly, your site could be near the top of the results provided by Google, Bing, and other major search engines. After all, the best site in the world won’t make a dime if no one can find it. Unlike a brick and mortar store, it’s unlikely that anyone will just wander into your ecommerce site.

Keep Them Coming Back

If you can engage your customers and let them know that their thoughts and desires are important, you’ll soon develop a loyal following. One of the best ways to find out if your marketing strategy is working as planned is to use a customer satisfaction survey. This tool can provide valuable information about your customers, including their likes, dislikes, and what you can do to improve their experience on your site. As a bonus, you can always give them a small reward for completing the survey. A discount coupon is usually appreciated, and this promotion can even draw in new shoppers. As your current user base tells their friends about the great offer they received just for answering a few questions, new customers will flock to your online shop.

By marketing your online fashion outlet to the world and asking for feedback, you can conquer the clothing world! Are your designs ready for global domination?

Finding full time employment isn’t always easy. Even if you are qualified for the positions you apply for, often there are far more applicants than positions available. When you need money and jobs are hard to come by, look into these sources of short term work so that you can keep up with the bills coming your way.

1.) Labor Ready Inc. or Manpower- Companies like these have branches all over the country and provide work on a daily basis. You don’t need a lengthy resume of previous experience to get some work with these companies. You just show up at the office prior to 9am and get yourself on the roster to work for the day. You will perform manual labor and often get paid on that same afternoon.

2.) Pro Search Inc. and other temporary staffing agencies- Becoming a temp allows you to earn a living without making any long term commitments to an employer. It also gives you access to different companies and positions you may not have considered previously. Temporary assignments can range from a week to several months. Most jobs you’re offered will be office positions and generally not too complex.

3.) Waiting Tables- The hourly wage you earn from waiting tables won’t pay the bills but many servers do well with tips. Visit local restaurants or read online to find out which businesses get the most foot traffic. When working for tips, you wouldn’t want to head to a restaurant that’s hardly ever busy. You can get a job waiting tables virtually anywhere in the country and it will help get you by for now.

With the current economic state, even though it is slowly recovering, the word “foreclosure” seems to be just about everywhere. Owning a home is something we all dream of, but with high unemployment rates and lay-offs, it can be hard to make the required monthly payments. The thought of losing a home is frightening, and something none of us want to think about. Sometimes, though, after we’ve tried everything we know how, we come up short and a foreclosure may loom in the near future.

What many people may not know is that there number of different options that will help stop a foreclosure. Bankruptcy is one of the most common. We’ve all seen advertisements for lawyers specializing in bankruptcy law, so there is help out there. This will stop any collections or lawsuits, and a “stay” is placed on house payments, which will allow the owner to work out a new, more affordable payment plan. Selling the home is another option, but always remember that alternative living arrangements needs to be made before the sale.

If these options are a bit too drastic for you, there is also the option of a payday loan, which will give you the extra money you need, should you find yourself short when it comes time to make your monthly payment.

Other fairly common options include working with the lender to arrange lower housing payments. Many lenders, if contacted early enough, are willing to do this. A forbearance will place any missed payments onto the end of your payment schedule.
